Dassault

In 2023, we launched the animated series “Did you know?” with Dassault Aviation. The first season, “Focus on”, highlighted the technical innovations of their aircraft. For the second season, “Flashback”, we reinvented the approach. We shifted the focus from technology to history. The objective was to create an entirely new visual identity for historical storytelling. We made no stylistic connection to the previous season. Our mission was to turn dense scripts and diverse archives into a dynamic, standalone narrative.

We designed a unique artistic direction for this project. We created a world of textures and cut-out paper. This “paper theater” concept provided the ideal solution for telling past stories. It allowed us to smoothly integrate any source like photos, blueprints, and video clips. The compositions were not static. Animated paint strokes and careful graphic assemblies brought them to life, connecting an archival aesthetic with a modern feel.

The project took nearly a year and involved a range of techniques. The visual signature of “Flashback” is a deliberate contrast in motion. Virtual cameras move fluidly, giving scenes a cinematic scope. In contrast, graphic elements are animated with a stutter effect at 14 frames per second. This choice reinforces the archival, handmade feel of the compositions while maintaining overall dynamism. To bring these scenes to life, we mixed archives, original creations, AI-generated images, and 3D modeling. An opening credit sequence, following a short introduction, solidified its status as a series and created a recurring event for the audience.

“Flashback” was a two-fold success. The project achieved its goals with quick management approval and a positive critical reception. It also demonstrated our ability to build a unique visual world for any new challenge. By adding to the “Did you know?” collection, we reinforced Dassault’s brand image. We gave their history a tangible and accessible credibility.
